寬永通寶，是日本第108代天皇水尾天皇的年號(hào)。寬永二年（1625年，明熹宗天啟五年），日本開(kāi)始鑄造“寬永通寶”銅錢，這一款銅錢流通民間后極受歡迎，一直從水尾天皇持續(xù)鑄造到孝明天皇，直到1867年才停止流通使用，共長(zhǎng)達(dá)242年經(jīng)歷了十代天皇，是日本使用時(shí)間最長(zhǎng)，鑄造數(shù)量最多的銅錢。

據(jù)傳寬永通寶早在明末清初時(shí)即流入中國(guó)，最初是中日海上貿(mào)易商販帶過(guò)來(lái)的，由于這種方孔銅錢工藝樣式上和中國(guó)銅錢并沒(méi)有什么區(qū)別，因此很快就在民間流傳通開(kāi)來(lái)，在清前期，由于統(tǒng)一天下和對(duì)外擴(kuò)張的過(guò)程中消耗了大量的帑幣，出現(xiàn)了錢價(jià)大跌、交易混亂的局面，致使部分周邊國(guó)家的銅錢乘機(jī)流入國(guó)內(nèi)，大行其道。除了寬永通寶，在清朝還出現(xiàn)了朝鮮王朝的“常平通寶”、安南的“光中”錢、“景勝”錢等，而日本的寬永通寶由于鑄量大，流通時(shí)間久，更是極受百姓的歡迎。

到了乾隆初年，寬永通的流通程度已經(jīng)引起了官府的注意，一度被懷疑為是民間私鑄之錢，還另用“年號(hào)”，這是公開(kāi)謀反之舉。此事還驚動(dòng)了乾隆皇帝，下旨江、浙、閩等沿海省份的總督徹查此事，經(jīng)江蘇巡撫莊有恭治下某縣幕僚汪輝祖的深入調(diào)查，憑借著其見(jiàn)多識(shí)廣，終得知這一種銅錢的來(lái)龍去脈。于是兩江總督尹繼善會(huì)同江蘇巡撫莊有恭聯(lián)合上奏，歷數(shù)這種銅錢的由來(lái)。
得知真相的乾隆皇帝一道圣旨，即嚴(yán)禁商船攜帶倭錢，否則嚴(yán)懲不貸。至于民間收藏的，則由官府出面收回，至此在中國(guó)流通了近兩百年的“寬永通寶”才算是正式正式停用
